Carly Gose Mrs. Szozda Senior Composition 29 January 2016 Social Media Affects Lives: An Argumentative Research Paper about Social Media Is social media a distraction? Some would argue that it is a huge distraction and affects productivity. Others would argue that social media helps people to become more productive. People argue that social networking sites may help people to connect with family and friends; however, social networking sites harm the society. They tend to cause social isolation. Social networking sites can lead to identity theft, hacking, and viruses. Lastly, social media leads to cyberbullying and sexting. To start, it is important to understand what social media is and how it works. Danah Boyd and Nicole Ellison, the authors of â€Å"Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship† state, â€Å"We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semipublic profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within a system† (211). This quote shows that social media sites allow people to keep in touch with people who are friends with one another. According to Hampton et al. and Pew Research Center, the authors of â€Å"Social Networking Sites and Our Lives† and Social Networking Fact Sheet state, social networking sites grew drastically since the launch of the sites.
